We bought this kit for my 12 year old daughter as we live at the top of a steep hill, and it's very tough to bike up. We installed the e-bike kit onto her Specialized Mountain bike, and here is my feedback.

First off, we chose this particular kit because the bike we were trying to convert had 27.5 inch tires and it's very difficult to find a kit that is compatible with this size tire. Next, the bike also had disc brakes, which this kit was also compatible with.

Installation: The kit was pretty straight forward and I watched to quick installation video to make sure I knew what I was doing. The video made it sound like the installation would be done within 5 minutes, but we did run into a few issues that could potentially be worked out in future product upgrades.

Issues: 1) The bag the battery came in to mount it to the bike frame doesn't latch very well and thus doesn't stay tightly fastened to the bike. The straps are cheaply made and they don't stay tightened. Additionally, the straps are not double-backed at the end, so when they do come loose, the connectors just fall off. It would be better if the straps had Velcro connectors or were just a little better made. 2) The rim that came with the kit wasn't compatible with the disc brake that was on the bike's existing rim. I had to spend another $75 buying and installing a compatible disc to use with the kit's rim. It would have been better to simply have this included (or at least mentioned by customer service when I called). 3) The piece that locked the motor (and rim) to the fork of the bike was too thin for a Specialized mountain bike, which caused the disc to rub against the side of the fork. I solved this by adding washers UNDER the included locking hardware, but it would have been better if thicker hardware options were included with the kit.

The results: The issues were finally worked out and it was time to test out the bike with the newly installed kit. My daughter was able to effortlessly ride up the once foreboding hill. This is exactly what we were hoping for, so (eventually) mission accomplished.

I am extremely happy with my decision to purchase my 500W kit from LEEDS 2 years ago. This kit is mounted on a Trek bike and goes with me on the back of my RV which has traveled from coast to coast and Alaska in all kinds of weather. Leeds has replaced 2 controllers and a wiring harness within the 1st year with no extra charges. I have urethane sealed the controller wiring to insure that water does not interrupt my ride. The wiring harness had a copper pin corrode which when replaced by LEEDS I sealed with a lubricant. Recently the motor has gotten very loud which prompted me to contact LEEDS and request information on maintenance for the motor which I was advised that there was none. With that information I decided to open the case and look for myself and found water condensation inside. Gears were fine but the metal stator was rusted. I used Corrosion X to neutralized the rust and lubricated the gears with white lube. Noise is now fading awa

Easy to install on my 29" bike. Made the 90 mile 2 day bike trip in late May a breeze.

Had a new part sent to me,but it wasn't the right one. I had to wait until they sent me an extension cord in order for it to work.

Put the 500 Series e-bike kit on a tandem bicycle for my special needs son and me to ride. The install was reasonably easy, though I had to get an adapter to mount the throttle and computer as they would not fit on my 24mm drop-bars. Once I got it all rigged up though, it's been great to ride. I ride it in "assist" mode (at the mid-power setting of 3) with me pedaling and my adult-sized son sometimes pedaling, and we get 25+ miles on the battery in hilly country. I can stretch it out a lot further on flat rides (rail trails). While I generally just leave the assist on at 3, I do use the throttle coming off red lights and on particularly challenging hills (It takes a lot to get our heavy ride moving (over 450 lbs. with the bike and 2 full sized riders).

I am 57 years old and weight ~260lbs and I am in good condition. However, before I bought and installed this 20.8 Ah Samsung Ultra E-Bike kit, I went on a 24 mile ride and half way through the ride there is a pretty steep 4.5 mile climb up hill. I had to stop several time before I got to the top and after finishing the climb I was spent and could not finish. So I installed this kit and went on the same ride and when I came to 4.5 mile climb I still had to pedal, but I had no problem reaching the top of the hill and finishing the 24 mile ride. The motor is strong enough to help you up the hill, but it won't do all the work, you will still need to pedal. I wanted a motor that would help, but not do all the work and this does that perfectly. I only use the motor when I am going up a hill or I am in a hurry to get back to the house. It will do around 15 mph on flat ground without any help. It is easy to install, but I still had a bike store put mine on to make sure it was done right. I also changed the switch for turning the motor on, so that I don't have to hold the button down the whole time. I would highly recommend the kit, for someone who wants some help, but doesn't want the bike to do all the work. Hills no longer intimidate me. I have also never ran out of charge while I was out riding and if you don't use the battery all the time it will probably go much further that 40 miles.

I know one thing, now i can use the converted bike for trips to the grocery store (and other stores) and save a nice bit of cash by not using the truck for these trips AND fewer kilometers on the the truck.

The doublewide motor axle torque washers was perfect! Since I had a mountain bike, the forks were thicker than a road bike so this was necessary to spread the forks to accommodate the new electric motor wheel. So far enjoying my ebike conversion after 3 months of use!

Back to the Future! This is a quick review of a 31 year old 1987 Raleigh mountain bike conversion using LEEDS 500 Watt front hub conversion kit. Yes, this conversion was performed on a 31 year old aluminum mountain bike with steel front fork. This bike has been rejuvenated with new tires, saddle, fenders, raised handle-bar and grips; this bike was brought into the future with LEEDS electric bike conversion kit. This update was done on my wife’s bike; I have the same bike but it is not electrified. These bikes are solid performers…but with the LEEDS kit, we can continue to use this investment into the future plus save well over a thousand dollars for a similar quality electric bike. With this conversion, the bikes total weight went from 41 pounds to 52 pounds, which is still lighter than most 26 inch electric bikes. The LEEDS conversion kit comes with all components/hardware needed for installation to include cobra flex route cable guides which were used on top tube to route the two cables from computer/ throttle and motor to the motor controller at the rear of the bike. I selected the conversion kit with the battery rack. I attached the motor controller (silver box) to the front of the battery rack using zip ties. With this bike build, I had about 1.5 foot of extra cabling remaining which I wrapped in a circle with zip-ties and stored beneath the bike’s saddle (no need to wrap around the head tube); this made for a clean build, eliminating cable clutter! I installed my own tire onto the LEEDS front hub motor/wheel assembly. All cabling is color coded with connector notch and arrows for ease of connection alignment. The front fork dropouts did require minor filing, with a rat-tail file, to allow proper depth for the axle / torque washer lugs. I did installed the optional motor torque arm on left side of the front fork, attaching with a stainless steel cushion clamp (avoids scratching fork) that I purchased at a local hardware store. Overall, the LEEDS kit build went very well and once all components were installed you are ready to ride. The bike is activated by turning on the battery switch then pressing the power switch on the LCD computer control. The initial 10 mile test ride of the bike went extremely well; the peddle assist was set to 1 of 4 levels and provided ample assist for moderate hills. The overall response during the start of peddling with PAS is a steady pull from the motor. With the front hub motor and conventional rear chain drive, the bike acts like an all-wheel drive system. Using just throttle control, mounted on the right handle bar; provides smooth, solid and quiet acceleration. The next test will include steeper hills and longer distances. The LEEDS e-bike kit is a solid performer; however, would like to see an option to include a LCD computer with higher resolution for estimated remaining battery time. Some e-bike computers show estimated battery life/time remaining as well as smaller battery usage increments of 5% versus 25%. Would also like an option to run electric lighting from the battery as well as a cell-phone charge port. In addition, would like to see the motor controller integrated within the bike’s battery assembly in the rear rack. Finally, I would like to acknowledge LEEDS outstanding customer support by Mandy Wallace. I was unsure that the front fork would have proper clearance for the front hub motor; Mandy ensured me that if that conversion did not work, I could return the kit to LEEDS free of charge. In addition, a 2 year warranty on the motor and 1 year on battery/controller/charger ensured me that LEEDS stands behind its product. Overall, very impressed with the LEEDS kit and outstanding customer service.

The 250 has a button for a "throttle." It works fine but can get cumbersome on long rides. The 500 comes with a throttle, which we appreciate. On the 500 you'll also get a digital readout and a locking battery that goes on your frame. The locking battery option may not work on a "girls" bike frame. You'll need the rack mounted system. Installation is easy, the most difficult part is changing the tire. If you can do that, you'll be fine. The 500 goes up most any hill.
My wife loves her Townie, so converting that bike was the way to go. The people at LEED are always responsive. I'd have given it 5 stars, if not for the "button." Get one, you won't be sorry. Highly recommend the 500 series.

I bought this for my wife so she could keep up with the group and not poop-out on the return trip. Her first time using it she had a huge grin on her face. She LOVES it.
